“Digging in the crates” means to look through crates of old vinyl records in search of obscure music that can be sampled to make new beats. This would traditionally be done at record stores, which are becoming fewer in number every year. Despite this, the tradition of “digging in the crates” lives on as music becomes more and more accessible than over due to the internet.
As a hip-hop enthusiast and overall music fan, here is my list of recommended classic records to listen to (credit to Spotify user Alex Gonzales for compiling this playlist). These records have all been sampled before, but the list provides a good jumping off point to get familiar with different musical artists you might not have known about.
